Getting Ready for Spring ! by Joe Curran

If getting really dirty, wet, cold and covered in mud isn’t your thing, you would probably prefer the road training Hetton Hawks have to offer. All of the training is on a closed, asphalt surfaced circuit in Hetton Lyons Country Park.

If you want to come along and learn loads of new skills, turn up in the spring in the main car park (see website closer to the time for exact details of when the road training begins).

Bring a bike, a helmet, suitable clothing (weather dependent) when you turn up. If you can help it, avoid wearing jeans as they can be very restrictive.

Shorts or tracksuit bottoms are ideal.

Most people will be riding on road bikes like this one, but this is not essential:

If you don’t have a bike like this, don’t worry because a mountain bike will do. If you could get some slick tyres for the mountain bike, this would be great.

In the training, you will learn what gears to use while on the road, how to shelter behind people when you are riding so you use less energy, how to work together as a group so you can ride faster than on your own and much more.

If you are unsure about anything, please don’t hesitate to contact me by email (my address is on the contacts page. Please state For attention of Joe.). I’ll try my best to help you, but if I cant, I’ll definitely find somebody who will.

Hope to see you in the spring,

Joe Curran, Hetton Hawks Boys Captain
